Description

NOTE:  This test is ONLY AVAILABLE TO AUSTRALIAN RESIDENTS.
The Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Antibodies Test is a blood test that detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to cytomegalovirus, a common virus from the herpes family. While CMV is usually harmless in healthy individuals, it can cause serious complications for pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and organ transplant recipients. The test measures two main types of antibodies: IgM and IgG. IgM antibodies are the first to appear in response to a CMV infection and typically indicate a recent or active infection. Detecting IgM antibodies is particularly crucial for vulnerable individuals, such as pregnant women, as the virus can be passed to the fetus. IgG antibodies, on the other hand, indicate a past infection, as they remain in the body for life. While IgG antibodies confirm previous exposure to the virus, they do not indicate an active infection. The presence of IgG antibodies is important for assessing immunity, especially in individuals at risk of CMV reactivation, such as those with compromised immune systems.
